Twitter Business Etiquette

Twitter can be a very powerful tool for businesses wishing to notify followers regarding business news, specials, etc.  The strength of this utility lies in the numbers. The more people you have who follow your “tweets”, the better it is for your business.

Here’s the catch, according to the “Twitter Help Section” there is a correlation between the amount of followers you have and the amount you are following.  Long story short, if you are following more than are following you, when you get to a certain ratio others will not be able to follow you until you bring your ratios back into balance. This means in lay person’s terms, if I’m following you and you aren’t following me your taking a spot I would rather have a mutual relationship with.  Don’t be offended then if I no longer follow you if you’re not following me, because frankly you’re taking up room I want to share with others.

The truth is if I want to build more followers, you gotta go!

This can seem harsh, but think about it this way many of the people “tweeting” are doing so to promote their business however by not following their followers mutually they’re essentially saying “what I have to say is important, more so than what you have to say”.

Now it could mean they just don’t know how to see who’s following them that they aren’t following back.  Answer “MyTweeple.com” In a nut shell, MyTweeple.com allows Twitter users to see who they’re following, who’s following them, and who they have a mutual following relationship with.

In summary, because there are ratios to consider here people, if your being followed on Twitter, follow those people back.  You may never know what you could be missing and it’s just good Twitter etiquette. If you are wondering why you’re not getting more followers you may need to cut loose some of those you are following who aren’t following you back.  It’s nothing personal.

Right now I have about 4289 or so people following me on Twitter that means each time I do a post or send a tweet, potentially that many people will see what I’ve written or what I’m promoting.  Twitter is very powerful for business, learn how to harness its power, you’ll be glad you did.
